Der Bodensee translates to Lake Constance, a lake with shorelines in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The foreground is a beauty shot taken of a Czech model for a 1960's magazine. It has also been featured in The New Yorker where it was used to illustrate a short story. Phillips' work has been exhibited in the MoMA and Gagosian Gallery in New York and the Tate and White Cube in London. His paintings are always striking and have a hint of subversion.
